 BUILT HERITAGE STUDIES & CONSERVATION

 2018-2019

Introduction

 In order to address the demand of in-service engineers, contractors, architects, conservation practitioners, students, buildings custodians, this Course has been designed and Conducted by J.J.College of Architecture and CSMVS Museum Art Conservation Centre and supported by the MMR Heritage Conservation Society, Mumbai.

 

Trainers

This programme is conducted by subject experts from all over the country ranging from architects to engineers, scientist, archaeologists and art conservators.

Modules

The program consist of 5 modules directed towards approaches to built heritage conservation; Material conservation; Structural conservation and Retrofit, Project management, Urban conservation and enabling environment. These modules include topics such as damage mapping, material and technology, lime plasters and mortars, stone, timber, metals, glass and ceramics, earthquake resistant structures, introduction of energy control services, maintenance, status reports, financing, tendering, BOQs, redevelopment, adaptive reuse, involvement of craftspersons, monitoring, health and safety, legislation, charters and advocacy.

 

Objective

The objective of this programme is to build capacity on the practical aspects of built heritage conservation. After the completion of five modules each student will be able to understand materials and technologies used in construction and detect deterioration of structures. They will be able to suggest appropriate preventive and remedial measure for treatment, including interventions such as retrofitting, and work under the larger sphere of urban conservation.

 

Pedagogy

 Lectures, workshops and hands on experience, site visits, group work, and self study.

Structure

 For receiving a Diploma in the course, a student must complete all five modules as mentioned above, within a timeframe of 12 to 24 months. A student must submit an assignment at the end of each module and appear for exams held at the end of the year. The diploma is jointly awarded to successful participants by Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, MMR-HCS and Sir J.J. College of Architecture.

 

 A person may also apply for specific module/modules they are interested in. Those who attend only the individual modules will be awarded a certificate of participation for that module after submission of an assignment.

 

Applicants

 Graduate degree in any discipline or Practical experience in related works. Engineers, contractors, architects, conservation practitioners, students, buildings custodians and others in related fields are encouraged to apply.

 

Institutions

 Institutions such as Architectural Colleges, Public Works Departments, Port Trusts, Indian Army, Archaeological Survey of India, State bodies, Metropolitan development boards and others may depute suitable candidates for the above modules.

 

Fees

  The course fee per module is INR 7,500/-. If a participant registers for all five modules together, a concessional fee of INR 35,000/- is charged, Diploma examination fee is 1000/-. In the event of a participant missing a module in the first year he/she is allowed to attend it the following year.

Selected applicants will be informed and payments can then be made by cheque, as soon as possible for confirmation of seat and up to one week prior to the commencement of the first module, depending on the availability of seats.
